Euphorbia corollata (Flowering Spurge)

Resembling Baby's Breath, Euphorbia corollata (Flowering Spurge) is an upright herbaceous perennial boasting whorls of smooth, bluish green leaves surrounding green stems. From early summer to fall, large and airy flower clusters are borne atop the main stem where 3-7 flowering stalks branch off. Blooming for about 6 weeks at the tips of each final branch, they feature a profusion of small and delicate blossoms with five white petal-like bracts surrounding the tiny true flowers. The baby's breath-like flowers are produced in such great quantities that the plant often tilts to one side because of the weight of its flowers. Rich in pollen and nectar, they attract pollinating insects. Many bird species, including wild turkey, greater prairie-chicken, bobwhite quail, and mourning dove feast on the edible seeds. The foliage often becomes an attractive reddish color in the fall. Noted for its long blooming season, low maintenance, resistance to deer and rabbits and its modest amount of self-seeding, Flowering Spurge is useful in sunny borders, as a groundcover and can be cultivated in a prairie garden.

• Grows up to 24-36 in. tall and wide (60-90 cm). Will slowly spread by self-seeding and creeping rhizomes to form a nice clump.
• Performs best in full sun or part shade in well-drained soils. This species is not fussy about soil conditions as long as they are well drained. Thrives without supplemental watering in normal to dry soil. 
• Perfect addition to cottage gardens or prairies and meadows.
• Remaining attractive during all its growing season, this remarkable plant is resilient to most pests and diseases, deer and rabbit resistant and is easy to care for.
• Propagate by seed sown unstratified in fall or stratified in spring. Easy to divide in spring or fall or to propagate by root cuttings.
• All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested. The milky sap may cause irritation to skin and eyes. This plant resents transplanting.
• Native to central and eastern United States, from Texas to Minnesota, and every Atlantic seaboard state from Georgia to New York.
