Dianthus Fire Star (Pink)
Noted for its compact growth and long blooming season, Dianthus 'Fire Star' (Pink) is a vigorous semi-evergreen perennial which produces an abundance of clove-scented, brilliant red flowers, up to 1.5 in. across (4 cm), adorned with a darker crimson eye. Blooming in late spring to mid-summer, the fiery blossoms, up to 3-5 per stem, rise slightly above a dense glaucous mound of narrow, gray-green leaves. Some sporadic rebloom in the summer may occur, specifically if the plant is deadheaded regularly. Easy to grow, and perfect for adding a splash of color in the garden, this Garden Pink makes an excellent ground cover and a cheerful edging at the front of sunny borders. Great for the rock garden too! Heat tolerant and evergreen in mild climates.
- Grows up to 6-9 in. tall (15-27 cm) and 6-12 in. wide (15-30 cm).
- Prefers full sun and enjoys neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils.
- Extremely versatile, this Dianthus is ideal for rock gardens, and border fronts. Effective as a ground cover in small areas or as an edging plant too. Excellent choice for hot dry sites or gravelly soils.
- Attracts bees and butterflies, but is ignored by deer.
- Deadhead to prolong flowering. Consider cutting the plant back after flowering in order to tidy the plant and to promote additional bloom in late summer or early fall.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
