Scilla sardensis (Lesser Glory of the Snow)

Native to Turkey, Scilla sardensis (Lesser Glory of the Snow) is a bulbous perennial producing two narrow, lance-shaped, semi-erect, basal leaves and a raceme of up to 15 slightly nodding, deep rich blue flowers, 1 in. across (2 cm), with small, white centers. Blooming from early to mid-spring, Lesser Glory of the Snow is a beautiful and reliable addition to the landscape, where it will happily multiply in optimum growing conditions.

  • Typically grows up to 4-8 in. tall (10-20 cm) and 1-2 in. wide (2-5 cm). Foliage will disappear by summer as the plant goes dormant. This plant will spread by offsets and self-seeding.
  • Easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. Performs well in average garden soils and thrives in sandy loams.
  • This plant is rarely affected by pests or diseases and is resistant to deer and rodents. Just plant it and forget about it!
  • This charming naturalizer provides color and contrast to the woodland garden, rock garden, under deciduous trees or shrubs, and naturalized areas. Spectacular when planted in large drifts. Combines beautifully with other flowering bulbs or perennials. Excellent edging plant.
  • To be planted in fall.
  • Propagate by seed, sown in pots in a cold frame when ripe or remove offsets in summer.
  • The whole plant is poisonous. Ingestion may cause severe discomfort. Wear gloves and wash your hands after handling.
