Extremely robust, Brugmansia sanguinea (Red Angel's Trumpet) is a semi-evergreen, tropical shrub or small tree boasting wonderfully colored, pendulous, narrow trumpet-shaped flowers, 6-10 in. long (15-25 cm). Unlike the other Brugmansia species adorned with pastel flowers, the blossoms display intense shining colors, green flower base, golden yellow side, and brilliant red mouth with yellow veins. Blooming from late summer to winter, they are borne in abundance, up to 40 at a time, and attract hummingbirds. This Brugmansia is not fragrant and does not flower well in hot summers. Temperatures above 71°F (21°C) seem to inhibit flower development. Reputedly the hardiest of the Brugmansias, it will stand short frosts, but generally does best in areas where the temperature rarely drops below 32°F (0°C). This plant is great in cool temperate gardens where it adds a tropical feel.

  • Grows up to 8-12 ft. tall (240-360 cm) and 6-8 ft. wide (180-240 cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is best grown in organically rich, moist, well-drained soils. Afternoon shade is appreciated in hot summer areas. Brugmansias are heavy feeders and need regular fertilization during the growing season to promote new growth and flowers.
  • In cool winter areas, grow outdoors in full sun after the danger of frost is passed. Grow under glass in full light over winter with a minimum of 45-50°F (7-10°C). In warm winter areas, plant as a specimen. Perfect for beds and borders, Mediterranean gardens, or containers.
  • Virtually disease free – watch for glasshouse red spider mite, glasshouse whitefly, thrips, and mealybugs under glass.
  • Native from northern Colombia to northern Chile.
  • All parts are highly toxic if ingested and sap may be an irritant. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
