Free-flowering and extremely cold-hardy, Rhododendron 'Dora Amateis' is a remarkable small evergreen shrub. Blooming in early to mid-spring, this Rhododendron hybrid bears an abundance of trumpet-shaped pure white flowers, slightly speckled pink and green within, and emitting a spicy perfume. Held in lax trusses of about 6 to 8 blooms, they provide a memorable scented display and contrast beautifully with the evergreen foliage of small dark green recurved leaves that becomes bronze-tinged in sunlight. Attractive and tough, this early midseason Rhododendron is one of the finest white dwarf hybrids. Exceptionally winter-hardy, it can withstand temperatures as low as -15°F (-26°C).
- Grows up with a broad, compact habit to 3-4 ft. tall and wide (90-120 cm).
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society and winner of the Rhododendron of the Year Award of the American Rhododendron Society for the Mid-Atlantic, Northwest, South Central, and South East regions.
- A sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, acidic, humusy, well-drained soils. Tolerates full sun, but performs best in shade. Plant shallowly in a location protected from strong winter winds. Protect from frost to prevent damage to flowers. Mulch annually with leaf mold to retain moisture, control weeds, and cool the soil.
- Perfect for shrub borders or mixed borders and shade gardens. Great for small gardens and containers too!
- Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds.
- Removing spent flowers promotes new growth.
- All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
