Artemisia pycnocephala (Sand Hill Sage) is a low-growing, evergreen perennial forming a soft mound of pleasantly aromatic, silky-gray, finely divided foliage. Clusters of small yellow flowers appear in summer on arching stalks to 18 in. tall (45 cm). If the flower stems are removed as they appear, the plant will remain more compact and attractive.

Native to the western United States coastline extending from Oregon to Central California, Sand Hill Sage grows on bluffs and in sandy soils exposed to salt air and wind. It thrives in coastal gardens, but often dies in hot inland gardens during periods of summer heat.

  • Grows up to 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
  • Performs best in dry,sandy, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerant of wind, heat, drought and salt.
  • Excellent for coastal gardens, xeriscape gardens or as a groundcover.
  • Cut back in the fall to prevent the plant from getting too woody over time. Pinch growth of young plants, if desired, to promote bushy branching.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Propagation is from seed or division of the root crown.
